The Bible is amazing in that it doesn't just gloss over the realm of human emotions but presents them in a manner that is realistic and relevant. This is perhaps most transparent in the book of Psalms. I can imagine psalmists of old reflecting upon their days as ordinary believers of an extraordinary God who sometimes didn't seem to answer their prayers. They would write psalms that expressed their frustrations, their wants... but also their gratitude and acknowledgment of His power and majesty. In a very loose sense, the Psalms are the "emo" diaries of believers from a long time ago. It remains potent in striking our hearts as we struggle through the ups and downs of life as well.
Today, I wanted to cry out to Him and here's what came of it:
Lord help me to have the wisdom to be aware of my limitations while grasping my potential as your new creation. Free me from an attitude of complacency and entitlement, and help me to strive for excellence, not for my own gain but for your fame. Let me taste the beauty of surrender and utter dependence on you. Plant in me seeds of humbleness, gentleness, and patience. Help me to see the world and those around me as you do, in light of love, mercy, and justice. Let your love for me overflow into the lives of others. May your word be in my heart and my love for you be declared among the nations. Shout, for the Lord is good! His faithfulness never fails.
