Perspective is Important

Regardless of your political stance, yesterday's presidential election was truly one for the ages. I just watched a CNN video clip of Colin Powell's reaction to the results and he said something interesting. He said, "President-elect Obama did not put himself forward as an African-American president. He put himself forward as an American who happened to be black, who happened to be African-American, and that ought to come after the title."

In the same vein, at SLU's Christian Medical Association, we are hoping to raise a new generation of doctors embracing the notion that they are Christians who happen to be doctors, not doctors who happen to be Christian.

Also, whether you think the new president-elect is the Messiah or the Devil himself (there seems to widely varying reactions coming from all over the place, even among Christians) or anywhere in between, let us remind ourselves that "the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone He wishes" (Daniel 4:32).

"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy" (Colossians 1:15-18).
